Books I Don’t Ever Plan on Reading

Readers know better than anyone that our books read pile is large, but our to read stack has already fallen on top of us. Sometimes you just got to narrow your stack down, and discover books (often popular ones) that when you see on your page, you have nothing against people reading it, but wouldn’t yourself.

This isn’t an unpopular opinion tag, but just books that if you tell me to read, I’ll kindly say no thanks. I’d appreciate no hate, in fact, comment below some books that you can’t see yourself ever reading.

Note: I am not saying I will ever read these books, I am not saying I will, but in the mean time I simply do not find interest in them. Please don’t convince yourself that I am making hateful judgement “before giving it a chance.” It is perfectly okay to find a book uninteresting but not necessarily hate it.

 1. Any book by Laini Taylor I like fantasy. I do, but urban fantasy just hasn’t been my priority in the past year or so. Whenever I hear about Daughter of Smoke and Bone or Strange the Dreamer I am just not interested. I feel like Taylor’s books would take 200 pages before anything actually happens.

2. Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead MY FRIENDS WILL NOT SHUT UP ABOUT VA. They assure me that Vampire Academy is not Twilight, and I believe them, but it’s a long series (if you count Bloodlines too) and frankly I’ve never been a fan of vampires, werewolves, etc. yet I like Mortal Instruments?? see I’m calling myself out! 

3. Summer I Turned Pretty series by Jenny Han Don’t get me wrong, I loveee To All the Boys I Loved Before trilogy, but SITP is about a cheesy stereotyped love triangle and a main character who probably isn’t “like most girls” so while I love a good contemporary, I simply don’t think it’d be worth the read.

4. Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth Self-explanatory.

5. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes I’m not sure what is about FK, but epic fantasy hasn’t been in my radar lately, and this series appears like any regular fantasy series with magic so I don’t think I’ll ever pick it up.

6.  Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis I know someone is going to comment, “Omggg that was my childhood how could you ??” But even child me was like, “nah” and I’ve seen the movie (the first one) maybe twice and I’ve never liked it. I wouldn’t read this series for a box of Turkish Delights, either. I certainly wouldn’t sell out my family for it either.

7. Any book by Sarah Dessen Chill out, I’ve read a book, it was Lock and Key. However, there was recently a lot of buzz about Once an For All. Honestly, I’m convinced that she takes the same old allocishet females and recycles the plot every time. Don’t @ me if it’s true.

8. The King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard I read the first two books. Red Queen was fantastic, Glass Sword was a let down. Therefore I don’t think I’ll pick up the rest of this series (yes, series.) I don’t want to say bookstagram ruined this series for me, but bookstagram ruined this series for me. However, I follow Victoria on Twitter and wow I love her shady tweets.

9. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer YOU KNOW THIS WAS COMING!! I’ve discovered there are two people on the spectrum: “Twilight was my entire teen years, don’t @ me” and “Twilight sucks so much never gonna read” and I’m the latter, sorry. And I never watched the movies either.

10. Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige I love retellings. I think Wicked is awesome (even if I don’t actually listen to the soundtrack.) But Dorothy Must Die? I’ve never wanted a Wizard of Oz retelling, and I don’t think I’ll ever bring myself to read it anytime soon.

11. Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkien I read The Hobbit for school last year. It wasn’t fun at all. I doubt I want to put myself through that several more times with the LotR series (and that doesn’t count the companion novels!) Also, I haven’t seen the movies either.

12. Any book by Jennifer L. Armentrout I can’t really explain this one. I don’t see anything interesting in her contemporaries, and the sci-fi Lux series doesn’t strike my interest much, either.

13. Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones I was asked to receive this book for promotion, and I said no. I really just don’t find the concept intriguing. I like musical-based books (I love This Savage Song!) but I don’t know. . .I like hyped books but when you aren’t interested in the book, the hype can seem like the most annoying thing in the world.

14. Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin Look, THESE BOOKS ARE BRICKS! My friend is a big fan of the TV series, I already know everything I need to know without the dedication and commitment to both the show + the bricks, I meant book series. I can save myself a heartbreak by skipping the series that kills a favorite character every episode.

15. The Diviners by Libba Bray OKAY, THE COVERS OF THIS BOOK slay my eyes, but as for the story itself, I don’t think I’ll read it. I love the 1920’s aesthetic but mystery isn’t really my forte. Never saying never, but the size intimidates me and mystery isn’t something I usually pick up.

16. Any classic ever ??? One of my biggest bookish turnoffs is thick, detailed, slow-paced writing. It’s so difficult to concentrate and really immerse yourself in the story. You know what that sounds like? EVERY CLASSIC EVER. I want to be a hipster reader and own cute classic editions, but I’m just super bored by paragraphs about nonsense the 18th century writers are famous for.

OKAY, I think I’ve given everyone a reason to hate me, so I’m going to end this post here while I still have my life. Seriously, no hate (except Carve the Mark, I hope that flops) to these books, we like what we like. How else would I have an average rating of 4.6 on Goodreads if I read what I didn’t think I’d enjoy? Exactly!
