Hello, readers! Glad to see you again
by which I mean you reading my blog through a screen. . .but same thing, right? I can’t quite recall the last time I just sat down and talked to you all, freestyle. No review, no planning. Okay, that’s a lie, I jot stuff down for every post of mine. THAT IS BESIDE THE POINT.
Why am I here again? Oh, right, spring reading update. It’s spring? Considering my entire weekend was like 40 degrees (Fahrenheit) it sure doesn’t feel like it. However, since I am a part of the Northern Hemisphere, apparently it’s springtime. Maybe someplace not called Ohio.
Like I’ve said before, “reading” update is just a general term for the broad spectrum of topics I’d like to cover in this post. I’ll be venting about books, blogging, school, bullet journaling, and even my sexuality (indeed.) Where do I begin?
Last time I wrote my winter reading update, I’d read about 11 books in two months. Speed up to beginning of May and I’ve managed to read 24 books so far. My reading life has suffered at the hands of AP US History (more on that later) but now that my studies are slowing down, my reading time will be doubled soon enough!
Here are my favorites I’ve read in March, April, and May so far:
- The Hate U Give
- A Crown of Wishes
- Milk and Honey
- Under Rose-Tainted Skies
- Queens of Geek
- We Are Okay
- Always and Forever, Lara Jean
(Note: all of these books are diverse in some way. . .my reading has definitely changed since last winter, nevermind a year ago.)
That being said, I’ve been reading a lot more diversity lately, mostly because I’ve spent so much time on Twitter compared to Instagram and the community on Twitter is. . .rather abrasive, but wonderful nonetheless.
These couple books alone have widened my horizons, and it’s not stopping there as I write a wishlist of diverse books to buy once I find the chance. I’ll leave a snippet of it below (half of it was deleted last night, oops)
- Simon v. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
- Tash Hearts Tolstoy
- The Secret of a Heart Note
- The Upside of Unrequited
- More Happy Than Not
There are certainly more, but that’s what I found after a glitch erased most of my list *gasp* until then I’ll stick with this mini wishlist for right now 🙂
Bullet Journal / Art
Despite my tumultuous school life, I still manage to journal every single day. Even if it’s just coloring in my habit tracker and sleep log, or jotting down my tasks for the day. In fact, I was so overwhelmed with studying for a big exam that I didn’t make my May spreads until April 30. (Usually I’m impatient and begin them about the 20th of each month.)
Honestly, not much has changed for me. I have converted my bookstagram into a fulltime studygram as well, making sure to include lots of journal pics. A stationary company even asked me to promote them! I got a code and everything! And to think I didn’t already feel like an official journal / book account ❤
Unfortunately, both packs of my Tombow Fudenosuke pens got lost in the mail, in February and in March. I don’t want to give up, but they’re not anywhere in stores near me and Amazon only ships from Japan, which didn’t go well for me. (If anyone is willing to buy me a pack and ship it. . .Contact me on Instagram or Twitter, I’d definitely consider it.)
In other news, I got a new sketchbook! It’s miniature size and I adore it so much! I’m probably going to take up sketching again, after my sister paid me to draw her anime style characters for a school project. I realized I’ve been missing out and kinda want to partake in some art this spring / summer! I haven’t since at least 2015 so this is pretty exciting for me, guys!!
That’s a lie. Since February I’ve been working on a galaxy painting, with the famous ACOMAF quote, “to the stars who listen, and the dreams that are answered” in white acrylic lettering and I adore it (even if SJM has me salty rn.) I finished it last week and it looks stunning, I might either hang it up or give it to a friend for her birthday. . .I’m still deciding at the moment. Either way, it turned out wonderfully.
As you guys may have noticed, I haven’t really been blogging much. Again. all in the matter of school and now that it’s winding down I intend on working on some new stuff in the next few months. In fact, I’d love to drop some hints on future ideas and reviews coming your way:
- Aro / Ace Discussion + Q&A (If you’ve seen my Twitter, you probably know this is in the works. . .you can leave your questions there too)
- When Dimple Met Rishi review + Twitter chat (Still in its early stages, but a fellow friend wants us to reread WDMR and host a Twitter chat. . .details to come)
- Tash Hearts Tolstoy review (eeeee I’m very excited for this one)
- Bookstagram Tips series (In its early stages, but is highly requested)
Alright, that’s about all I can give you! (And all that I have. . .) So I hope you’re at least a little more excited now, I know I am!
Guess what? My blog turns one year old as of today! I didn’t actually publish my first blog post until May 27, 2016, BUT THAT IS BESIDE THE POINT. Just let me be excited for now ❤ I won’t get all emotional but I’m so happy to have such incredible followers and readers of my nonsense rambling about books and my regular life 🙂
My music taste has been FLUCTUATING like hell all late winter and early spring. I downloaded Ed Sheeran for the first time in March (it was Divide) adore it, downloaded Multiply, Plus, and parts of 5. . .and suddenly I’m sick of him and his beautiful vocals. I loved Divide, so why can’t I adore his older stuff just as much?
I’ve also been dabbling in musicals, too. I downloaded the entirety of the Waitress (because Sara Bareilles) soundtrack, and it’s great. I’m also in the process of anticipating Amelie, which stars Philippa Soo from Hamilton, of course! However the album doesn’t release until May 19th so unfortunately here I wait, replaying Stay and Times Are Hard for Dreamers until then.
Broadway is cute but nothing compares to Hamilton. I wish I wanted to listen to it, but I’ve got to be patient. Give me another 6 months and I’ll be in the mood for Ham again.
DON’T FORGET HALSEY. I think this strange, so-called “music slump” of mine is just perpetuating itself until Halsey drops her new album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, June 2nd. Until then, I’ll be replaying Eyes Closed forever and forever and forever.
Movies / TV
In my bullet journal, I have a wishlist (more like watchlist) of movies I want to see in 2017. While I’d made monumental strides, I still have lots of space to fill up potential films to see when I have the chance.
But here are some movies I’ve seen since March:
- La La Land
- Dirty Dancing
- Crazy, Stupid Love
- Easy A
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I really haven’t watched much television, mostly because I just haven’t been feeling it. However, I did watch Stranger Things so I could understand the gist of things when I visited Wizarding Comic Con in mid-March with the main guest star Millie Bobby Brown. (P.S. she was a total sweetheart and I have videos of her during a panel!)
In addition to Stranger Things, I watched Yuri!! On Ice finally, which pretty much just kick-started my love of Japanese anime again (thank you Victuuri *wink wink*) I kinda want to re-watch it. . .I also binged 13 Reasons Why the weekend it released on Netflix. Definitely seeing some mixed reviews on that one.
Some movies I’d like to watch soon:
- Hidden Figures
- Before I Fall
- Everything, Everything (release: May 19th)
In other news, Doctor Who season 10 premiered on BBC America!! I’ve been watching each episode as it premieres every Saturday night. My friends and I gather in my basement and enjoy the beautiful (and diverse, too) companion Bill and my favorite sassy Twelfth doctor.
It feels so long since I watched any Doctor Who
it was taken off Netflix, those twats!! and the new season makes everything feel right again ❤
Lots has been happening in my personal life as well. Time is slipping from my second year in high school and soon I’ll be a junior. That’s so strange, I swear I just started high school last year. . .
In May, my brother is graduating high school, and my sister is graduating college. There’s definitely going to be some changes this summer as my brother prepares to leave for four years and my sister prepares to unload her life at home once again. Meanwhile nothing has really changed for me, personally, but instead feeling the impact of all of this occurring.
I took my first AP test! I’ve probably briefly explained it before, but AP stands for Advanced Placement and is a common honors system in the United States to establish aid and funds for students. My first exam was the AP US History exam last Friday and it. was. intense. That’s a lie. It was easier than I imagined.
However, answering 55 multiple choice, 4 short answers, and 2 extended responses (essays) in 4 hours is no easy task. *swipes sweat from brow* After the exam, I went home early from school and enjoyed some time off. All that sleep wasted to study for my AP class are finally catching up to me. . .
I’d like to say never again but unfortunately there’s at least 2 other AP exams waiting for me over the next two years, so I’ll have to endure the heavy studying and 4 hour exams once more. . .
However, I’m glad that school is winding down so I can relax and enjoy myself with books and writing. In April, I attempted Camp NaNoWriMo (since I skipped regular November NaNoWriMo due to AP priorities) and it was a success?? I completed my 10,000 word goal the last day in April, which is uncommon for me, but it worked out in the end and I got to progress in my novel.
I’ve been writing it since July last year, so that’s unfortunate. . .but this summer I intend to devote myself to writing and (hopefully) finishing it. In fact, I hit a rough patch and may have to rewrite parts of my plot. . .So, wish me luck!
OoOoh, grab a steaming cup of tea, because I’m going to be SPILLING so much gossip. About me. I’m aromantic asexual. Wow, it feels nice to say that in writing.
I intend to go further in depth with a full blog post devoted to Aro/Ace-ness, but for now I’d like to briefly explain that while some are attracted to the opposite gender, same gender, etc, I am in fact attracted to no one.
Yep, that’s a thing.
I’ve been pondering my sexuality for a while, but upon learning the labels and establishing my place in the Aro/Ace community has made my year so much better already. I feel like weight has lifted from my shoulders.
On my twitter is a Q&A thread for questions you may have on Aromantic Asexuality and I would love to answer if you’d like! I’m on a quest to spread awareness, so the more questions, the better ❤
That’s all I have to say! I hope you enjoyed my rambling about things you may or may not care about
hopefully you do I’m glad you read this post anyway!
Once again I want to wish you all a lovely day. My blog would be nowhere without the support of my amazing readers! Here’s to another great year of discussion and geeking out about books books books 🙂
What have you been up to this spring (or fall, depending on location)? Tell me below!
